The intersection of Howard and Paulina in Chicago’s North Side has unfortunately regained its reputation as one of the most violent spots in the area. Over the weekend, a drive-by gunman targeted three men who were hanging out on the corner, resulting in a chaotic scene captured by a nearby surveillance camera.

In the chilling footage, a group of men can be seen loitering on the corner, some standing in the street while others gather on the sidewalk near a currency exchange. As a gray sedan approaches and turns onto Paulina, shots ring out from inside the vehicle, sending bystanders scrambling for cover. Surprisingly, one pedestrian crossing the street remains unfazed, walking at a casual pace as if unaffected by the gunfire.

The Chicago Police Department reported that three men were injured in the incident. A 42-year-old was shot in the arm and hip, a 30-year-old was shot in the hip and grazed on the hand, and a 35-year-old sustained gunshot wounds to the hand and chest. While the first two victims were in stable condition, the third was listed in critical condition.

This recent shooting adds to the history of violence at this intersection. Last year, five individuals were shot on the 1600 block of West Howard, with two more shootings occurring on Paulina—one just north of Howard and the other south of the intersection. Tragically, three of the victims from last year’s incidents did not survive.

In 2023, a total of 13 people were shot on the 1600 block of West Howard, with one fatality. The area has been plagued by issues stemming from an open-air drug market, which residents and business owners believe to be a contributing factor to the violence. Police efforts to clean up the area resulted in arrests for gun possession and some of the shootings, leading to a temporary lull in violence until this recent incident.

The intersection of Howard and Paulina serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by communities in Chicago. Despite efforts to address the underlying issues, the threat of violence continues to loom over this troubled area.
