Top Court in Brazil Orders Immediate Suspension of X Platform

In a dramatic turn of events, a top court in Brazil has issued a country-wide suspension of the X platform following a prolonged legal battle with Elon Musk’s social media company over content moderation. This ruling comes after months of disputes and tensions between X and Brazilian authorities, as reported by Bloomberg.

The court’s decision includes a provision that imposes daily fines of 50,000 reais, approximately $8,900, on individuals using VPNs to access the X platform. However, the enforcement of this decree remains uncertain.

Earlier in the month, X made the bold move to cease its operations in Brazil in protest against court orders demanding the removal of accounts accused of spreading misinformation. The company cited Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes’ ultimatum to name a legal representative in Brazil or face a ban on their services as the reason for their decision.

In response to the court’s latest ruling, X’s global affairs team took to Twitter to express their defiance, stating, “Soon, we expect Judge Alexandre de Moraes will order X to be shut down in Brazil, simply because we would not comply with his illegal orders to censor his political opponents.”

Despite the pressure from Brazilian authorities, X has declared its refusal to comply with the top court’s demands and has vowed to publish the court’s directives in the coming days.
