A second US aircraft carrier is currently positioned in the Middle East in anticipation of upcoming talks between the United States and Iran regarding Tehran’s advancing nuclear program, as revealed by satellite images analyzed by The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The USS Carl Vinson and its strike group are operating in the Arabian Sea, coinciding with suspected US airstrikes targeting areas in Yemen controlled by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels.

A connection has been drawn by American officials between the US’ ongoing campaign against the Houthis and efforts to exert pressure on Iran during the negotiations.

There is uncertainty surrounding the location of the talks scheduled for the weekend, with initial reports indicating Rome as the venue, but Iran insisting on Oman as the host. The US has yet to confirm the location of the negotiations.

The negotiations hold significant importance for both nations, given their longstanding enmity over the years.

President Trump has repeatedly threatened airstrikes against Iran’s nuclear program if an agreement is not reached. Iranian officials, on the other hand, have hinted at the possibility of pursuing a nuclear weapon using their enriched uranium stockpile.

US Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff, who represented America in the recent talks in Oman, hinted at revisiting the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal that President Trump withdrew from in 2018 as a basis for the current negotiations.

Witkoff emphasized the importance of verification in the enrichment and weaponization aspects of Iran’s nuclear program, including missile capabilities.

He expressed optimism about resolving the situation through diplomatic means and dialogue.

Vinson Joins Truman as Second US Aircraft Carrier in the Middle East

Satellite images captured on Monday show the USS Carl Vinson, alongside its accompanying vessels, operating northeast of Socotra Island near Yemen. The deployment of the Vinson aims to support the USS Harry S. Truman in conducting airstrikes against the Houthi rebels.

The US Navy’s 5th Fleet overseeing the region has refrained from divulging specific details about the Vinson’s operations.

Witkoff Suggests 3.67% Uranium Enrichment for Iran

Witkoff proposed a specific uranium enrichment level for Iran’s nuclear program, highlighting the need for adherence to international standards. He emphasized the importance of verification in ensuring compliance with enrichment limits.

The 2015 nuclear deal had set restrictions on Iran’s uranium enrichment levels, in exchange for sanctions relief. Negotiations are underway to address Iran’s enrichment activities and missile capabilities.

Iran’s willingness to reduce enrichment levels has been hinted at in recent statements, indicating a potential for reaching a new agreement.

Challenges lie ahead in negotiations, particularly concerning Iran’s ballistic missile program, which serves as a deterrent against regional threats.
