The phenomenon of “sanctuary” jurisdictions raises significant concerns regarding the safety of residents within those areas. A recent incident in Prince George’s County, Maryland, exemplifies this issue, where an undocumented immigrant was apprehended and charged with murder and assault, only to be released back into the community despite an ICE detainer request. This scenario starkly illustrates the potential dangers stemming from the county’s controversial sanctuary policies.

Fortunately, ICE intervened and re-arrested the individual, who is now slated for deportation back to Guatemala. This incident underscores the perilous consequences of local policies that prioritize non-cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.

The negligence exhibited by progressive politicians is placing citizens in jeopardy.

  • In 2019, former Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks — currently serving as a U.S. Senator — proudly declared her administration’s stance of “not participating in immigration enforcement,” asserting that such responsibilities should rest solely with the federal government.
  • In the same year, then-Council Member Deni Taveras — now a member of the Maryland House of Delegates — expressed her concerns about the “incredible amount of fear” surrounding immigration enforcement, advocating for better support for local residents.
  • Acting County Executive Tara Jackson asserted that the Prince George’s County Police Department refrains from engaging in federal immigration enforcement, emphasizing their primary focus on ensuring public safety and fostering trust within the community, regardless of immigration status.
  • Maryland State Delegate Nicole Williams (D-Prince George’s) proposed legislation to prohibit local law enforcement from collaborating with ICE, arguing that such cooperation undermines community safety and the willingness of residents to report crimes.
  • State Senator Alonzo Washington (D-Prince George’s) stated that local law enforcement should not enforce immigration laws, suggesting that building better relationships with immigrant communities is crucial for public safety.
