NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch has criticized Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark for failing to crack down on crime effectively in the northernmost borough of New York City. Tisch highlighted the alarming rate of car theft in the Bronx, stating that it is the best place in the city to steal a car due to the lack of consequences for offenders. She emphasized the need for car theft to be charged as a felony to deter criminals.

While car thefts have decreased by 12% citywide in the first quarter of the year, the Bronx has experienced a 3.6% increase in stolen vehicles, according to Tisch. She stressed the importance of charging offenders appropriately to combat this trend effectively. Tisch’s comments were made at the Citizens Crime Commission of New York City breakfast forum, where she also discussed the NYPD’s new initiative to address quality of life crimes and allocate 2,000 officers citywide to tackle common complaints from residents.

The commissioner’s remarks reflect a broader concern about the enforcement of laws and the prosecution of criminals in the Bronx. Critics have accused Clark of being lenient on crime, citing data that shows the Bronx DA’s office has had poor conviction and dismissal rates in major crime categories over the past few years. In response to Tisch’s comments, the Bronx DA’s office defended its charging decisions, stating that they are based on the evidence available and the need to prove cases in court.

The Bronx DA’s office highlighted its partnership with the NYPD Auto Crime unit to address auto thefts and target organized crime groups involved in car theft. By focusing on long-term investigations and prosecuting offenders vigorously, the office aims to disrupt criminal patterns and hold individuals accountable for their actions. The statement emphasized the office’s commitment to addressing auto crimes and collaborating with law enforcement agencies to combat car theft effectively.
