Peacock, the NBCUniversal streamer, has made the decision to cancel the comedies “Based on a True Story” and “Mr. Throwback,” as reported exclusively by Variety. The second season of “Based on a True Story” premiered in November 2024, while “Mr. Throwback” only had one season which aired in August 2024. Although Peacock does not disclose viewership numbers, both shows received positive reviews upon their release.

“Based on a True Story” starred Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina as a couple facing financial struggles who venture into starting a true crime podcast to investigate whether their plumber might be a serial killer. The show also featured Tom Bateman, Liana Liberato, and Priscilla Quintana in the cast. Created by Craig Rosenberg, the series had Annie Weisman as the writer and showrunner for Season 2, with Jaclyn Moore also contributing as a writer and executive producer. Cuoco and Messina served as executive producers as well. The show was produced by UCP.

On the other hand, “Mr. Throwback” followed a memorabilia dealer (played by Adam Pally) on a quest for redemption by reconnecting with his sixth-grade basketball teammate, NBA star Steph Curry, who portrayed himself in the series. Ego Nwodim and Ayden Mayeri also had starring roles, with guest appearances by Tracy Letts, Layla Scalisi, Tien Tran, and Rich Sommer. The show was created by David Caspe, Matthew Libman, and Daniel Libman, with Curry and Pally as executive producers alongside David Wain. Universal Television was the studio behind the production.

Peacock’s current lineup of scripted shows includes titles such as “Long Bright River” with Amanda Seyfried, the upcoming fifth season of “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” and the second season of “Poker Face.” Upcoming projects on the platform include “Twisted Metal” Season 2, a series adaptation of “The Burbs” starring Keke Palmer, and the second season of the popular comedy prequel “Ted.”
