The Department of Homeland Security recently sent a letter to Harvard University regarding the compliance of the school with regulations governing foreign students. The letter highlighted concerns about the university’s failure to condemn antisemitism, creating a hostile environment for Jewish students on campus.

The US government recognizes the importance of foreign students in contributing to Harvard’s substantial endowment, but also emphasizes the need for a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students. President Donald J. Trump’s Executive Order 14188 emphasizes the need to combat anti-Semitism vigorously and hold perpetrators of unlawful anti-Semitic harassment and violence accountable.

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) regularly monitors SEVP-approved schools to ensure compliance with regulations and the accuracy of information in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Harvard University is required to provide information on student visa holders’ illegal activity, dangerous or violent behavior, threats to others, and deprivation of rights by April 30, 2025, to maintain SEVP certification.

It is imperative for Harvard University to address these concerns and take necessary actions to create a safe and inclusive environment for all students. Failure to comply with DHS requirements may result in consequences for the university’s SEVP certification.

This letter serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding the values of inclusivity and safety on campus, and the responsibility of educational institutions to prioritize the well-being of all students. Harvard University must take proactive steps to address issues of antisemitism and ensure a welcoming environment for all members of the community.
