A new Clueless TV series is in the works, but this time without Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz. The iconic 1995 film is set to be revived on Peacock, with Silverstone attached to star and executive produce. The show will be written by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, known for creating Gossip Girl, along with Jordan Weiss from Dollface. Amy Heckerling, the writer-director of the original movie, and producer Robert Lawrence will also be executive producers on the project.
The original Clueless, inspired by Jane Austen’s novel Emma, followed Silverstone’s Cher as she navigated high school life as the most popular girl at Bronson Alcott High School. The film’s success led to a TV series in 1996, created by Heckerling and featuring Stacey Dash, Donald Faison, and Elisa Donovan reprising their roles from the film. However, Silverstone and Paul Rudd did not return for the TV series, and the role of Cher was recast with Rachel Blanchard. The show aired on ABC for three seasons before being canceled.
While Peacock previously had a Clueless reboot focused on Dash’s character Dionne in development, that project never came to fruition. Now, with Silverstone back on board, fans can look forward to a new take on the beloved story.
Silverstone will reprise her role as Cher, following her appearance in a Super Bowl commercial in 2023. It is unclear if any other original cast members will return for the series. The show will be available for streaming on NBC’s platform, Peacock.
The writing team for the Clueless TV series includes Schwartz and Savage, known for their work on Gossip Girl and The O.C., as well as Weiss from Dollface. Heckerling, the original film’s writer, and Silverstone will also be involved as executive producers. Fans of the original film can expect a fresh take on the classic story with this new series.
