An innovative use of artificial intelligence that leverages nurses’ notes to monitor hospital patients has shown remarkable success in reducing in-hospital deaths by 36%. This groundbreaking AI system, known as The Communicating Narrative Concerns Entered by RNs (CONCERN) Early Warning System (EWS), was tested in real-time at four hospitals within NewYork-Presbyterian and Mass General Brigham organizations.

The study, published in Nature Medicine, revealed that the AI system not only significantly decreased mortality rates but also led to an 11.2% reduction in the length of hospital stays. The system, developed by a team led by Sarah Rosetti, a critical care nurse and associate professor at Columbia University, analyzed over 1,200 models to predict patient deterioration based on various factors documented by nurses in electronic health records.

The success of the AI system in adult patients prompted plans to extend the research to pediatric patients. However, funding for this critical expansion was abruptly canceled by the Trump administration due to alleged issues with Columbia University’s response to campus demonstrations. Despite efforts to address the concerns raised by the administration, there is uncertainty regarding the reinstatement of the grant.

The CONCERN system was designed to transform nurses’ observations into actionable insights that could improve patient outcomes. By providing concrete data points to replace subjective concerns, the system facilitated quicker responses to patients at risk of deterioration. This proactive approach resulted in a higher rate of ICU transfers but also led to a 7.5% decrease in the risk of sepsis, a life-threatening infection.

Despite the setback in funding, the research team is determined to continue their work and expand the use of the CONCERN system to more hospitals. They are also exploring ways to make the system more widely accessible through academic research licenses and potential patent applications. While the financial impact of saving lives remains to be determined, the researchers are confident that the system has the potential to improve patient care and reduce healthcare costs.

The hospitals involved in the study have continued to utilize the CONCERN system, with plans to implement it across all facilities. The success of this AI-driven approach highlights the potential for technology to enhance patient care and outcomes in healthcare settings.
