The Trump administration is making efforts to streamline the process of firing federal workers as part of its initiative to reduce the size of the federal government and enhance control over it.

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has proposed a rule to reclassify a large number of career civil servants as “at-will” employees, making them easier to terminate, according to a statement from the White House on Friday.

The proposed rule aims to address federal employees who are deemed “unaccountable” and prioritize their own interests over those of the American people.

President Trump and his supporters, including Elon Musk, are advocating for the reduction of government bureaucracy and have labeled it as a “deep state.” They have criticized the presence of “rogue bureaucrats” within the government, alleging corruption and inefficiency without substantial evidence. Trump has emphasized the need for flexibility in appointing individuals who align with his agenda and removing those who do not.

Trump stated in a post on his Truth Social platform that government workers who do not align with the President’s policies or engage in corrupt activities should not retain their positions.

The initiative to remove civil service protections from certain employees was initiated on Trump’s first day in office with an executive order that established a new category of political appointees within the federal workforce. The order aims to reclassify approximately 50,000 positions as Schedule Policy/Career, enabling agencies to dismiss individuals in policy-influencing roles for poor performance or misconduct.

The White House emphasized that the new rule does not require personal or political support for the President, but rather a commitment to implementing the law and administration policies.

The American Federation of Government Employees has filed a lawsuit against the administration to safeguard civil service workers, expressing concerns that the rule change will compromise the merit-based hiring system and the integrity of the civil service.

Trump’s administration continues to implement significant changes within the federal government, including organizational restructuring and dismissals of employees deemed disloyal.

Furthermore, Trump has removed several government officials, including Justice Department employees involved in investigations related to him, for perceived disloyalty.
