Article by Susan Edmunds from RNZ

Scott Koster, a resident of Tauranga, has criticized Air New Zealand for showcasing its new uniforms while airfares remain high for many travelers. Koster shared his frustration while trying to book a flight for his daughter to return to university in Wellington. He found it more cost-effective for her to take a bus to Auckland, then an Uber to the airport, and fly Jetstar to Wellington, rather than booking a direct flight with Air New Zealand from Tauranga to Wellington.

He expressed disappointment in the high prices set by Air New Zealand, ranging from $430 to $735 for a one-way ticket. Koster compared these prices to flights to Los Angeles in November, noting that it was cheaper to fly to the United States than to Wellington.

Koster also criticized the timing of Air New Zealand’s uniform reveal, stating that it seemed insensitive to discuss luxury items when many New Zealanders were struggling with the cost of living. He has filed a complaint with the Commerce Commission regarding the airline’s pricing practices.

Consumer Concerns

Consumer NZ investigative writer Vanessa Prately highlighted the frequent complaints received by the organization regarding high domestic flight prices, especially during holiday periods. She emphasized the impact of dynamic pricing algorithms and the lack of competition on certain routes, such as the Wellington to Tauranga route, where Air New Zealand holds a monopoly.

Air New Zealand’s Response

In response, Air New Zealand explained that the high prices during peak travel times were due to increased demand. The airline utilizes a supply and demand pricing system to manage seat availability and encourage bookings. Air New Zealand advised travelers to book early and remain flexible to secure cheaper fares.

Despite the airline’s explanation, Koster’s concerns reflect a broader issue of affordability and competition in the domestic flight market. Consumers continue to face challenges in accessing reasonably priced airfares, especially during holiday seasons.
