Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) stock soared to $480 per share in December, fueled by optimism surrounding CEO Elon Musk’s relationship with then-president Donald Trump. However, the tides have turned, and the stock has plummeted by 50% from its peak. Analysts, including Dan Ives at Wedbush Securities, attribute this decline to Musk’s foray into politics, which has created a “brand crisis” for the company.

Ives, who has been a staunch supporter of Tesla in the past, now warns that the company is at a crossroads that could fundamentally alter the investment thesis if Musk does not distance himself from politics. The fallout from Musk’s political involvement has led to a decline in market share and sales for Tesla globally.

The company, known for its innovative electric vehicles, has faced challenges due to Musk’s ties to the Trump administration, resulting in a 25% tariff on imported parts and a negative perception among consumers. Despite a 13% drop in first-quarter deliveries and a decline in market share in key regions like the U.S., Europe, and China, Ives maintains a buy rating on the stock, albeit with a reduced target price of $315 per share.

Looking ahead, Tesla is poised for a potential turnaround with the launch of robotaxi services and the development of Optimus humanoid robots. These ventures present multitrillion-dollar opportunities for the company, with the potential for accelerated earnings growth if executed successfully.

While there is inherent execution risk associated with Tesla’s ambitious projects, patient investors who believe in Musk’s vision for the company may find value in purchasing shares at the current discounted price. It is crucial for Musk to refocus on Tesla’s core business and steer clear of political entanglements to rebuild trust with consumers and investors.

In conclusion, while Tesla faces challenges stemming from Musk’s political involvement, the company’s long-term prospects remain promising if it can deliver on its innovative initiatives. Investors should weigh the risks and rewards carefully before making investment decisions in the current market climate.
