Jeff Bezos-backed Slate Auto Teases Transformer-Like EV Concept in California

Just days before its highly anticipated launch event at Long Beach Airport on April 24, Slate Auto, a Michigan-based startup backed by Jeff Bezos, has made waves in California by strategically placing multiple concept versions of its electric vehicle (EV) on the streets. This unconventional marketing tactic has piqued the interest of onlookers and insiders alike, hinting at the company’s innovative approach to selling a customizable “Transformer”-like vehicle.

Founded in 2022, Slate Auto has operated in secrecy until recently, when JS revealed Bezos’ financial involvement and the startup’s plan to offer a base model EV priced at around $25,000. This base model, known as the “Blank Slate” version, allows buyers to personalize and customize their vehicle to their preferences. Slate has even filed trademarks for phrases like “We Built It. You Make It.” to emphasize its commitment to customization.

Over the weekend, Slate made a bold statement in Venice, California, where it showcased a concept version of its truck disguised as a two-door SUV for a fictitious business. Similarly, Reddit users shared images of another version of the truck designed to resemble a hatchback, sparking curiosity and speculation among automotive enthusiasts.

The versatility of Slate’s truck design has been a focal point for the company, which secured over $100 million in funding for its innovative approach. Investors were reportedly impressed by Slate’s “Transformer” metaphor, with the company showcasing the ability to quickly customize the vehicle during pitch meetings, leaving investors amazed by the transformation.

One notable investor in Slate’s Series B funding round is Mark Walter, CEO of Guggenheim Partners and controlling owner of the LA Dodgers, who has joined Slate’s board. Despite the buzz surrounding Slate’s unique concept, the company has remained tight-lipped about the vehicle’s specs and interior details, leaving automotive journalists and enthusiasts eager for more information.

As the countdown to Slate’s launch event continues, automotive journalists who have been briefed on the vehicle remain under strict non-disclosure agreements, heightening anticipation for Thursday’s unveiling. According to David Tracy of The Autopian, the Slate truck is described as unlike any other vehicle seen in recent memory, hinting at a truly groundbreaking design that promises to revolutionize the automotive industry.
