Space: the final frontier for military operations? Indeed, the US Space Force has taken a significant step by unveiling a comprehensive framework aimed at conducting warfare beyond our planet’s atmosphere. This initiative is part of their ongoing preparations for potential conflict in the orbital domain.
According to Space.com:
“For years, the Space Force has been engaging in training programs designed for orbital warfare, collaborating with American industries to innovate in spacecraft and armaments, and forging international alliances to uphold peaceful standards in space. Now, the newest branch of the U.S. military has officially introduced its ‘Space Warfighting’ framework, which delineates how leadership can prepare and train units for potential conflict in space.”
“The document not only establishes a unified glossary for counterspace operations but also outlines a spectrum of responsible offensive and defensive strategies that the Guardians may implement to secure control over space and ensure the efficacy of U.S. military operations,” states the Space Force in its announcement.
The framework elaborates on both offensive and defensive maneuvers, emphasizing the imperative for U.S. space superiority, which may eventually entail targeting and neutralizing enemy spacecraft.
The United States now seeks the capability to “project military power in space,” thereby safeguarding satellites and other orbital assets.
Moreover, this power could also be utilized to “deny adversaries the operational use of their own spacecraft.”
“The service’s new warfighting framework points out that, unlike traditional warfare, engagements in space will heavily rely on automated systems that can reduce or even eliminate human decision-making. This is critical due to the rapid speeds at which spacecraft operate and the congested nature of orbital paths filled with satellites. The report emphasizes that thorough analysis must guide how and when humans interact with these advanced systems,” it notes.
Combat in space is projected to unfold across three primary domains: orbital warfare between spacecraft, electromagnetic warfare targeting the control of the electromagnetic spectrum (including tactics like radiofrequency jamming), and cyberspace warfare, which seeks to disrupt an adversary’s computer networks.
As there are currently no established rules governing warfare in space, Space Force personnel are encouraged to grasp underlying principles and “break the rules” to reveal the strategic genius that space operations can offer.
