Get Ready to Witness a Rare Celestial Event: The Smiley Face Moon!

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and noticed something that made you smile? Well, get ready for a rare treat on the nights of Thursday 24 and Friday 25 April. A special alignment of celestial bodies is set to create a configuration that some are calling the “smiley face” in the sky.

During these nights, the waning crescent Moon will be joined by the planets Venus and Saturn in a close formation. Depending on your location, this alignment may resemble a smiley face – although a slightly elongated, pouting, and tilted version of one.

While the smiley face resemblance may be a bit of a stretch, this event is a great opportunity to witness a conjunction – when celestial objects appear close together in the sky.

During this time, the Moon will be a slender crescent, with the next new Moon scheduled for 27 April. If you have clear skies, you may even see the faint glow of earthshine illuminating the dark side of the Moon.

Both Venus and Saturn will be visible to the naked eye, with Venus shining brightly as one of the most prominent objects in the night sky. Saturn, although less bright, should still be easily noticeable.

If you have binoculars or a telescope, this is a great time to enhance your viewing experience. Observing Saturn and its iconic rings through a telescope is an unforgettable sight.

Mercury will also make an appearance closer to the horizon, although it may be a bit trickier to spot due to its proximity to the Sun.

For those looking to extend their stargazing adventure, Mars and Jupiter can be seen earlier in the night following the path of the Sun across the sky.

Don’t miss the opportunity to witness Venus at its brightest on the night of April 27, a spectacle that won’t be matched until November 2026. Head outside and enjoy the celestial show!
