Trump Envoy Compares Mar-a-Lago to French Palace, Prompting Ridicule

Recently, a Trump special envoy raised eyebrows by likening President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago beach club in Florida to a historic 18th-century French palace. Steve Witkoff, a former real estate mogul, made this comparison during a visit with Ukrainian and European officials at the French presidential palace. While standing in the Salon des Ambassadeurs in the Palais de l’Élysée in Paris, Witkoff boldly stated that the room bore a resemblance to Trump’s lavish club.

The Salon des Ambassadeurs features intricate gold embellishments dating back to the 18th century when it was owned by French banker Nicolas Beaujon. In contrast, Mar-a-Lago’s opulent interior has also gained attention, particularly during Trump’s tenure as president when it was revealed that classified documents were stored in various rooms, including a ballroom and even a bathroom.

Trump’s fondness for gold decor is well-documented, with the creation of the “Donald J. Trump Grand Ballroom” in 2005 boasting a Louis XIV gold finish. This affinity for lavish furnishings extended to the Oval Office during Trump’s second term, where even the television remote control was gilded. The president’s penchant for gold accents has drawn criticism, especially when showcased in official meetings with world leaders.

Trump’s Vision of a “Golden Age” in Arts and Culture

Trump’s self-appointed role as the board chair of the Kennedy Center and his promise to usher in a “golden age” for American arts and culture reflect his fixation on luxury and opulence. This literal interpretation of a golden era is exemplified by his personal preferences for gilded decor in both his private properties and official spaces.

Despite the ridicule sparked by the comparison between Mar-a-Lago and the French palace, Trump’s devotion to gold detailing remains a defining characteristic of his aesthetic sensibilities. Whether it’s transforming the Oval Office or hosting foreign dignitaries in gilded surroundings, Trump’s affinity for luxury continues to be a topic of debate and discussion.
