A jury convicted the last of three friends involved in the tragic incident of throwing a rock through a car windshield, resulting in the death of 20-year-old Alexa Bartell in Colorado. The convicted teen, Joseph Koenig, was found guilty of first-degree murder after a two-week trial filled with conflicting testimonies from the defendants. Sentencing is set for June 3.

The prosecution argued that Koenig threw the fatal rock based on evidence that his actions were consistent with the crime. However, Koenig maintained that it was another person in the group who committed the act. The two friends who took plea deals claimed that Koenig was responsible.

While the defense acknowledged Koenig’s participation in the rock-throwing spree, they contended that it was another defendant, Zachary Kwak, who threw the deadly rock. They also highlighted Koenig’s borderline personality disorder as a factor affecting his judgment.

Witness testimonies revealed that after the fatal incident, the friends circled back to the scene but did not check on Bartell or call for help. Bartell’s body was only discovered later by her girlfriend, who traced her phone to the location. The prosecution relied on the testimonies of the friends to build their case against Koenig.

Kwak and Karol-Chik, the other defendants, provided conflicting accounts of the events that night, with Karol-Chik implicating Koenig and Kwak denying any involvement. The defense raised doubts about the credibility of their testimonies, emphasizing that there was no intent to harm anyone.

Kwak and Karol-Chik entered into plea deals, with Kwak pleading guilty to first-degree assault and second-degree assault, facing a significant prison sentence. Karol-Chik pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and other charges, potentially leading to a lengthy prison term.
