Federal Regulations Update

Let’s dive right into the latest updates on federal regulations in the transportation sector. The U.S. Department of Transportation recently introduced a new Automated Vehicle Framework, which includes a standing general order (SGO) on crash reporting for vehicles equipped with advanced driver-assistance systems and automated driving systems. Changes were also made to the Automated Vehicle Exemption Program (AVEP).

The SGO modifies the reporting requirements for vehicles with Level 2 driving automation involved in crashes. Previously, any vehicle with Level 2 or above advanced driver-assistance system had to report a crash within five days, regardless of the severity. The new order now exempts vehicles with ADS from this reporting, focusing only on incidents involving fatalities, injuries, or vulnerable road users.

During a recent event, DOT Secretary Sean Duffy highlighted the importance of streamlining reporting requirements for autonomous vehicles to ensure efficient data collection without unnecessary burdens.
