Riding the bus to go shopping can be more than just a mundane task for clients of the Plus Bus shopping service. It’s a weekly opportunity to connect, share recipes, and take in the sights of the city.

Founded in 2003 as a charitable trust, the Plus Bus service offers low-cost, supported shopping trips for older individuals, those with mobility challenges, and those recovering from injury or surgery. Currently, the service operates two trips per week.

Recently, the Tuesday morning group of the Plus Bus service was featured in a piece by The Star. This group of older women, including Helen Ross, Kathleen Bradfield, Betty McKie, Nancy Gillies, and Audrey, have been enjoying their weekly shopping outings for up to a decade. Volunteer driver Neil Redmond and volunteer assistant Ruth Arnison pick them up from their homes all over the city and take them to Mornington for their shopping.

According to Ms. Arnison, the Tuesday shoppers are a delightful group who relish the social aspect of the bus trips. They chat, swap stories, and exchange recipes, making the outing more than just a shopping excursion.

The women themselves expressed their enjoyment of the weekly trips, highlighting the camaraderie and sense of community they’ve built over the years. They praised Neil and Ruth for their assistance and kindness, noting that they go above and beyond to help with shopping and even deliver groceries to their homes when needed.

In addition to the shopping trips, the Plus Bus service also offers a grocery collection and delivery service for clients who are unable to shop themselves. Plus Bus administrator Jennie Archer mentioned that there is room for more clients to join the service and encouraged interested individuals to reach out for more information or sign up.
