The Role of the Y Chromosome in Men’s Lifespan

New Scientist. Science news and long reads from expert journalists, covering developments in science, technology, health and the environment on the website and the magazine.

Women have historically outlived men, and this trend persists worldwide. Various factors have been proposed to explain this phenomenon, from lifestyle choices to genetic predispositions. However, a new theory suggests that the key to understanding the difference in lifespan between men and women lies in the Y chromosome.

Recent research indicates that as men age, they experience a loss of the Y chromosome in many of their cells. This loss, although imperceptible to the individual, has significant implications for health in later years. Studies have shown a correlation between Y chromosome loss in men and an increased risk of age-related diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s.

According to experts like Lars Forsberg from Uppsala University and Kenneth Walsh from the University of Virginia, the presence of the Y chromosome plays a crucial role in men’s overall health and longevity. Understanding the impact of Y chromosome loss on the immune system and disease susceptibility could lead to new strategies for promoting men’s health as they age.

Further research is needed to fully elucidate the relationship between Y chromosome loss and lifespan, but the emerging insights offer promising avenues for improving men’s health outcomes in the future.
