AI is revolutionizing the way code is written at Microsoft and Google

During a recent fireside chat at Meta’s LlamaCon conference, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed that 20%-30% of code inside the company’s repositories was “written by software” — in other words, AI. This highlights the significant role that artificial intelligence is playing in shaping the future of software development.

Nadella shared that Microsoft has been making strides in AI-generated code, with Python showing more progress compared to C++. This aligns with the company’s goal of leveraging AI to enhance productivity and efficiency in coding processes.

Microsoft’s Chief Technology Officer, Kevin Scott, has even bolder predictions, suggesting that by 2030, 95% of all code will be AI-generated. This underscores the growing influence of AI in reshaping the landscape of software development and coding practices.

Interestingly, when asked about the extent of AI-generated code at Meta, CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted that he was unsure about the exact percentage. This indicates that different tech giants are at varying stages of integrating AI into their coding workflows.

On the other hand, Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, recently stated that AI is responsible for generating more than 30% of the company’s code. While these figures demonstrate the widespread adoption of AI in coding, it’s essential to consider the nuances in how AI-generated code is defined and measured by different companies.
