Supporters and detractors of a leading theory of how consciousness arises are at odds in a heated debate. Integrated Information Theory (IIT), which posits that consciousness can be quantified on a mathematical scale, is under scrutiny for its potential implications in sensitive ethical discussions surrounding abortion and the sentience of artificial intelligences. Critics argue that IIT is pseudo-science with dangerous implications, while proponents dismiss these claims as mere jealousy.

The clash between these competing theories has sparked a fervent debate within the scientific community.
