Google’s Gemini Set to Dominate Mobile AI Assistant Market

According to Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai, Gemini could potentially become the leading mobile AI assistant by the end of this year, making its way to nearly every smartphone worldwide. Pichai recently discussed his company’s AI plans in court, hinting at the possibility of Gemini being included as an AI option in iOS 19 upon its release later this year.

With Gemini already holding a stronghold as the primary AI assistant on Android, the largest mobile OS globally, its potential expansion to iOS would solidify Google’s position in the AI market.

On the other hand, Google’s main competitor, ChatGPT, has some integration with Apple Intelligence in iOS 18 but lacks presence on Android unless users download the ChatGPT app.

Why Gemini is Likely Coming to iOS

Pichai mentioned ongoing discussions with Apple’s CEO Tim Cook throughout 2024, hinting at a potential AI collaboration expected to be finalized by mid-2025. The discovery of code in the iOS 18.4 beta further supports the speculation of Gemini’s integration into iOS.

Despite Apple’s significant investment in its AI initiatives, the partnership with Google for Gemini on iOS seems plausible given Apple’s history of leveraging Google’s expertise in areas where it excels. For instance, Google services like YouTube and mapping solutions were previously integrated into early iPhone models.

Furthermore, Apple’s agreement with Google to feature the latter as the default search engine on Safari highlights the pragmatic approach Apple takes when partnering with Google.

Challenges Faced by Apple Intelligence

While Apple Intelligence is a key component of Apple’s AI strategy, it has faced challenges in keeping pace with competitors like Google. Rumors suggest that Apple’s AI overhaul for Siri is expected to debut with iOS 19 alongside the launch of the iPhone 17.

Reports of internal conflicts and organizational issues within Apple may have contributed to the delay in the company’s AI advancements following the iPhone 16 release. This presents an opportunity for Google to potentially fill the void and offer iOS users the smart features they’ve been lacking.
