SHANGHAI — China is currently evaluating the situation following multiple attempts by the United States to initiate trade talks, indicating a potential breakthrough in their ongoing trade dispute.

However, in a statement, China’s Commerce Ministry highlighted that the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration are a major hurdle to any negotiations.

The Commerce Ministry stated, “If the U.S. side wants to talk, it must show sincerity and be prepared to correct its erroneous actions and cancel its unilateral tariff increases.”

Currently, Chinese imports into the U.S. are facing a substantial 145% tariff, while U.S. goods entering China are subject to tariffs of 125%.

Recent reports from exporters, importers, and port officials suggest a significant slowdown in trade activities due to the escalating tariffs.

Both sides seem reluctant to compromise, with President Trump and his administration expressing optimism about potential talks and tariff reductions, while Chinese officials remain firm on their stance.

In response to the speculations about ongoing talks, the Commerce Ministry reiterated China’s position, stating, “If it’s a fight, we’ll fight. If it’s talks, the door is open.”

The ministry emphasized, “Saying one thing but doing another, or even attempting to engage in coercion and blackmail under the guise of talks, will not work on the Chinese side.”
