Sea lion Ronan continues to showcase her rhythmic abilities, even after many years have passed. She can groove to various music genres, but her true talent shines when she bobs to disco hits like “Boogie Wonderland.” Peter Cook, a behavioral neuroscientist at New College of Florida, who has been studying Ronan’s rhythmic skills for a decade, praises her for nailing the tempo changes of the song.

Unlike many other animals, Ronan can move to a beat, a trait typically associated with humans, parrots, and some primates. Her unique ability has led scientists to rethink the significance of music in the animal kingdom. Rescued at a young age, Ronan gained fame for her musical prowess at the University of California, Santa Cruz’s Long Marine Laboratory.

Ronan joins the ranks of other skilled animal movers like Snowball the dancing cockatoo, challenging the notion that responding to music and recognizing a beat is exclusive to humans. What sets Ronan apart is her ability to dance to a beat without being a vocal learner, a trait previously thought to be essential for rhythmic skills.

In a recent study published in Scientific Reports, researchers observed Ronan’s response to percussion beats in a laboratory setting. The sea lion effortlessly bobbed her head to different tempos, showcasing her flexibility in recognizing new rhythms. Comparatively, 10 college students were also tested, but none could match Ronan’s beat-keeping skills.

Hailed as one of the top ambassadors of animal musicality, Ronan’s success has inspired researchers to further explore the rhythmic abilities of other sea lions. While they believe that more sea lions may possess similar skills, Ronan will always stand out as a star performer.
