May is here, and with it comes a new month full of celestial wonders to behold. While March and April may have had their fair share of cosmic delights, May brings its own unique offerings to those who look up at the night sky. From meteor showers to full moons, there’s plenty to see and experience in the vast expanse above us.

One of the highlights of May will be Mars visiting the Beehive cluster, officially known as M44. This cluster of stars has captivated astronomers for centuries, with its ethereal appearance earning it nicknames like “The Beehive” and “The Ghost.” Mars will be visible in front of M44 throughout the first week of May, providing a stunning celestial sight for stargazers.

Another celestial event to look forward to is the Eta Aquarids meteor shower, which is predicted to peak on May 5 and 6. This annual meteor shower will bring around 10 meteors per hour, with the peak offering up to 50 meteors per hour streaking across the sky at a breathtaking speed of 40 miles per second.

On May 12, skywatchers can witness the Full Flower Moon, named for the abundance of flowers that bloom during this time of year in the northern hemisphere. The moon will reach peak brightness at 12:56 p.m. EDT, providing a beautiful sight for those who appreciate the natural beauty of the night sky.

For those in Hawai’i, May also brings the phenomenon of Lāhaina Noon, where the sun passes directly overhead, casting no shadows for a brief moment. This unique event occurs between the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer and will be visible in Hawai’i from May 14 to 30. The Bishop Museum offers a helpful guide for those interested in witnessing this eerie phenomenon firsthand.

As always, it’s essential to practice safe viewing habits when observing the night sky, especially during events like Lāhaina Noon. Make sure to find a dark location away from light pollution and never look directly at the sun. By taking these precautions, you can fully enjoy the wonders of the cosmos in the month of May.

So, mark your calendars and set your sights on the sky this May for a month full of celestial delights waiting to be discovered. Happy stargazing!
