The tragic and mysterious death of Caitlin Tracey, a 36-year-old woman found at the bottom of a South Loop condo building stairwell, continues to baffle investigators. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed that Tracey died from injuries sustained from a fall from height, but the manner of her death remains undetermined.

Tracey, who resided in New Buffalo, Michigan, was staying at her husband Adam Beckerink’s South Loop condo at the time of her death. Beckerink reported his wife missing on October 26, the day before her body was discovered at 1201 South Prairie on October 27.

Family members revealed that Tracey’s death occurred just two days before a scheduled jury trial in Michigan, where Beckerink faced felony charges related to interfering with Tracey’s attempts to call 911 and resisting arrest. Another domestic violence case was also pending against Beckerink in Michigan in 2024.

Although Tracey had filed for a protective order in Cook County in 2023, citing instances of verbal and physical abuse by Beckerink, he has not been implicated in her death. Court records show that Beckerink has never been charged with any crimes in Cook County.

The family successfully obtained control of Tracey’s remains in November following a legal battle with Beckerink. The circumstances surrounding Tracey’s death, including the events leading up to her fall in the stairwell, remain shrouded in mystery.

Despite the troubling allegations of domestic violence and the unresolved nature of Tracey’s death, no concrete evidence has emerged to incriminate Beckerink. The case underscores the complexities of intimate partner violence and the challenges of seeking justice in such situations.
