President Trump Announces 100% Tariff on Foreign Movies

President Donald Trump declared on Sunday a 100% tariff on movies produced outside the United States, citing a rapid decline in the US movie industry due to incentives offered by other countries to attract American filmmakers.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “This poses a National Security threat as it is a coordinated effort by other nations. It is also a form of messaging and propaganda.”

He has instructed relevant US government agencies, such as the Department of Commerce, to initiate the process of imposing a 100% tariff on all foreign films imported into the United States.

Trump emphasized, “WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!”

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, posting on X, confirmed, “We’re on it.”

According to FilmLA, film and television production in Los Angeles has declined by nearly 40% over the past decade. This move aims to address the imbalance caused by more generous incentives offered by other countries.

Global governments have been offering lucrative tax credits and rebates to attract productions and claim a larger portion of the $248 billion projected to be spent globally on content production in 2025.

Trump’s announcement follows his trade war with China and the imposition of global tariffs, which have impacted markets and raised concerns about a potential US recession.

Former Commerce official William Reinsch warned that retaliation against the foreign movie tariffs could be detrimental to the US industry, stating, “The repercussions will be severe. We stand to lose more than we gain, and justifying this move under national security grounds would be challenging.”
