After a decade away from acting, Italian multi-hyphenate Marco Calvani made his return to the screen in Tina Fey’s Netflix series “The Four Seasons.” Calvani, who hails from Prato, Italy, had initially trained as an actor in Tuscany before transitioning to writing and directing. His career as a playwright and filmmaker took off when he moved to New York, with his play “The View From Up There” directed by Estelle Parsons in an off-Broadway production.

In 2024, Calvani directed his first feature film “High Tide,” a queer romance set in Provincetown that premiered at SXSW and starred Marisa Tomei, James Bland, and his husband, Brazilian actor Marco Pigossi. His second feature was in the works when he received a call from his friend Colman Domingo, leading to his role in “The Four Seasons.”

In the series, Calvani plays Claude, the only non-American in the group, a character that resonates with his experiences as an immigrant in the U.S. He brings depth to Claude’s over-anxious nature, steering clear of Italian stereotypes and flamboyant portrayals often associated with middle-aged gay men. Finding a balance between comedy and emotional depth was a challenge that Calvani navigated by tapping into Claude’s immigrant background and fears.

Calvani acknowledges the significance of his role as part of a queer interracial couple in the series, particularly in a time when LGBT rights and immigration issues are at the forefront of political discourse. He expresses pride in portraying a character that reflects the current social climate, even if it means putting himself out there in a way that feels unsafe amidst the political tensions.

With his return to acting in “The Four Seasons,” Marco Calvani showcases his versatility and depth as an artist, bringing authenticity and complexity to his character while shining a light on important social issues. His journey from actor to writer-director and back to acting demonstrates his willingness to evolve and embrace new challenges in his artistic career. As an immigrant living in the United States on a green card, I am proud to represent the LGBTQ+ community as a public figure. I am part of an interracial gay couple on a mainstream show that is gaining popularity in both blue and red states. This opportunity to showcase a diverse and inclusive relationship on television is something that I take great pride in.

Being able to openly portray a gay character on a successful show is a privilege that I do not take for granted. It is important for me to be authentic and true to myself, both on and off screen. The support from fans and viewers has been overwhelming, and I am grateful for the positive impact that our representation has had on the LGBTQ+ community.

Despite the challenges that come with being an immigrant and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I am determined to continue advocating for equality and acceptance. I believe that visibility and representation are key in breaking down barriers and promoting understanding among different communities.

This interview has been a reminder of the progress that has been made towards LGBTQ+ rights, but also serves as a reminder of the work that still needs to be done. I am committed to using my platform to amplify marginalized voices and push for positive change.

In conclusion, I am honored to be a part of a show that is making waves in mainstream media. I hope that our representation as an interracial gay couple will inspire others to embrace diversity and celebrate love in all its forms. Thank you for your continued support and for allowing me to share my story.
