As Governor Kathy Hochul gears up for a challenging re-election campaign next year, she is touting a state budget deal packed with initiatives aimed at enhancing affordability in New York. However, a controversial addition to the budget has stirred up criticism and controversy.

The focus of this controversy is a last-minute amendment to the budget that seeks to appease the Hasidic Jewish community, a group known for its significant influence in elections. This amendment aims to weaken a longstanding law that mandates private schools to provide a basic education. While this change has garnered support from Hasidic leaders, it has drawn sharp criticism from education experts, legislators, and even some members of Governor Hochul’s own team.

The proposed amendment, expected to pass through the Senate and Assembly soon, would delay repercussions for private schools failing to meet educational standards and make it easier for schools to demonstrate compliance with the law. It would allow private schools to choose their preferred accreditation agencies and provide alternative methods to prove adherence to educational requirements.

Critics, including Senator Liz Krueger, have condemned the amendment as a “secretive backroom deal” that undermines educational standards. The state education commissioner, Betty Rosa, has labeled the changes as a “travesty” for children, emphasizing the potential negative impact on students’ futures.

Despite the backlash, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie defended the amendment, stating that it offers religious schools options for complying with state regulations without lowering educational standards. However, Assemblyman Micah Lasher expressed discomfort with the lack of public discussion surrounding the amendment and its potential consequences for thousands of children.

Governor Hochul, under scrutiny for supporting the amendment, defended the change as a response to legislative concerns. She emphasized that the amendment does not compromise the essence of educational standards but provides additional avenues for schools to demonstrate compliance.

The controversy surrounding the amendment highlights the delicate balance between political considerations and educational integrity. As Governor Hochul navigates the fallout from this decision, the implications for her re-election campaign and broader Democratic prospects in upcoming elections remain uncertain.
