The Met Gala 2025 was a night to remember, as celebrities gathered to celebrate the Costume Institute’s “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” exhibition. This groundbreaking exhibition delved into the history of the Black dandy and highlighted the significance of clothing and style in shaping Black identities within the Atlantic diaspora.

For this year’s Met Gala, stars took inspiration from the past to pay homage to the theme. Iconic figures such as Diana Ross’s Tracy Chambers from the 1975 film “Mahogany” served as a popular reference point. Celebrities like Zendaya, Anna Sawai, and Kerry Washington rocked sharp white tailoring and matching wide-brimmed hats in tribute to the character. Additionally, dancer and civil rights activist Josephine Baker inspired stunning looks worn by Gigi Hadid, FKA twigs, Dua Lipa, and Megan Thee Stallion, with nods to the glamorous era of the ’20s.

Expanding on the concept of dandyism, Maluma and Willy Chavarria drew inspiration from the mid-1940s, specifically the Chicano culture and the Pachucos, who used their unique sense of style as a form of self-expression and empowerment.

The evening also saw touching tributes to the late André Leon Talley, the influential former editor of Vogue. From Colman Domingo’s blue Valentino cape reminiscent of Talley’s iconic 2011 Met Gala look to Tessa Thompson’s church fan adorned with an image of the legendary creative, the red carpet was filled with heartfelt nods to Talley’s legacy.

The Met Gala 2025 red carpet was a sight to behold, with celebrities embracing the theme and paying homage to the rich history of Black style and identity. It was a true celebration of fashion, culture, and creativity.
