Trump Takes Credit for India-Pakistan Ceasefire Agreement
Over the weekend, India and Pakistan announced a ceasefire agreement to end the recent hostilities between the two nations. The ceasefire, brokered with the assistance of the United States, marks a significant step towards peace in the region.
US President Donald Trump was quick to claim credit for the agreement, posting on his social media platform Truth Social, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence.”
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, confirmed the ceasefire in a social media post, emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to peace and security in the region while maintaining sovereignty and territorial integrity.
India also confirmed the ceasefire, with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stating that both countries had agreed to halt all fighting and military action on land, air, and sea.
The recent escalation in tensions between India and Pakistan stemmed from a gun attack in Kashmir, allegedly carried out by Pakistani-backed terrorists, which resulted in the death of Indian civilians. In retaliation, India launched missile strikes and drone attacks into Pakistan, prompting fears of a broader conflict.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio played a key role in facilitating the ceasefire, engaging with senior officials from both countries to de-escalate the situation and initiate talks on a broader set of issues at a neutral site.
Rubio commended the leadership of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for choosing the path of peace and diplomacy. He also offered US assistance in starting constructive talks to prevent future conflicts.
The ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan represents a significant step towards resolving longstanding conflicts and fostering stability in the region. The involvement of the United States in mediating the agreement underscores the importance of international cooperation in promoting peace and security.
