In August 2021, a surprising package arrived in Nicole Archer’s mailbox in Manhattan. The package, originating from Sarasota, Fla., contained a legal document that revealed a generous gift left to her by a beloved college professor. Dr. Archer, a 49-year-old art history and gender studies professor, was astonished to discover that she had been bequeathed $100,000 by her former mentor, Prof. Cris Hassold.

Prof. Hassold had taught art history at New College of Florida for over 50 years, leaving a lasting impact on her students. Described as a complex figure, Prof. Hassold had a reputation for being intense and demanding. Despite her quirks and sometimes harsh teaching style, her students remembered her as a force of good in their lives. The “cult of Cris” lived on in her 31 favorite students, who inherited her life savings.

New College of Florida, located in Sarasota, was known for its countercultural atmosphere. Prof. Hassold’s classes were rigorous, delving into dense primary sources and fostering deep discussions among students. Her dimly lit sessions in the Old Caples Mansion were legendary, with students spending hours analyzing art and literature.

Many of Prof. Hassold’s former students shared personal anecdotes about their time with her. From scathing critiques of art assignments to intimate conversations during dinners, Prof. Hassold played a significant role in shaping their academic and personal lives. Her hoarding tendencies and reclusive nature were also well-known among her students, who often helped her clean and organize her home.

In 2016, Prof. Hassold retired at the age of 85, leaving her former students with the promise of a gift in her will. When she passed away in 2020, her students were surprised to learn that she had amassed a $2.8 million estate, which she divided among 36 individuals, including 31 former students. The bequests ranged from $26,000 to $560,000, based on the closeness of the relationship and perceived financial need.

For Dr. Archer and others, receiving this unexpected inheritance was a bittersweet reminder of their mentor’s impact on their lives. The money provided a sense of support and validation, reflecting Prof. Hassold’s desire to give back to those who had meant so much to her. As Dr. Archer reflected on her gift, she felt a sense of gratitude and a renewed commitment to her academic career.

The legacy of Prof. Cris Hassold lives on in the lives of her former students, who continue to cherish the memories and lessons she imparted. The story of this enigmatic professor and her generous gift serves as a testament to the lasting influence of dedicated educators and the profound impact they can have on their students’ lives.
