After moving from Miami to L.A., Zaya came out to her stepmom, who was taken aback by the enormity of the information. She knew she had to be prepared for whatever challenges lay ahead. The first step was to be humble and open-minded, ready to fight for Zaya in ways she had never fought for anyone before.

The decision to be leaders in the LGBTQ+ community was not intentional, but rather a natural progression of wanting to ensure that all children, including Zaya, have access to the same freedoms and opportunities as everyone else. The focus was on protecting her peace, freedom, and offering a safe space for her to thrive. This commitment extended to all their children, creating an environment where their world expands rather than shrinks.

Despite being in the advocacy space for some time, the increasing rhetoric and threats faced by the LGBTQ+ community, especially under the Trump administration, made it imperative to have an escape plan. Ensuring that all school settings were not only welcoming but also ready to protect students like Zaya became a top priority. If an institution was not willing to prioritize the safety and well-being of their children, then it was not the right fit.

Preparation was key in this fight for equality and acceptance. Zaya needed to be equipped with the tools and mindset to navigate the challenges ahead. It was not just about talk; action was necessary. Sacrificing their children was not an option for Zaya’s parents. They were prepared to lay down their lives to protect their children and fight for their rights.

Being a great mother meant standing up for their children, fighting for their peace, freedom, and happiness. It was a continuous battle, but one that they were willing to take on for the sake of their children’s well-being. The commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for Zaya and all children like her was unwavering.
