Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish citizen studying at Tufts University on a student visa, returned to Massachusetts on Saturday evening after spending six weeks in federal custody. Her case gained national attention and sparked outrage over President Trump’s immigration policies.

Upon her arrival at Boston Logan International Airport, Ms. Ozturk expressed gratitude and joy for her release from a detention facility in Louisiana. Despite the ordeal, she remained positive and thanked her supporters for their kindness. She emphasized her faith in the American justice system and called America the greatest democracy in the world.

Ms. Ozturk, a fifth-year doctoral student and Fulbright scholar specializing in children’s media, was among over a thousand international students whose visas were revoked by the federal government. This action was part of the Trump administration’s crackdown on higher education, citing concerns of antisemitism.

Her detention stemmed from an opinion piece she wrote for the student newspaper criticizing the university’s handling of pro-Palestinian demands. Supporters argued that her detention was in retaliation for exercising her freedom of speech, as guaranteed by the First Amendment.

Friends and former professors of Ms. Ozturk expressed a mix of emotions at her release. Gulay Kaplan, a close friend who drove 11 hours to see her at the airport, described her as kind-hearted and shocked by the ordeal. She emphasized the chilling effect it could have on others who speak out.

In a significant legal development, Judge William K. Sessions III ordered Ms. Ozturk’s immediate release, citing concerns about freedom of speech for non-citizens. The government’s accusations of her supporting Hamas were based solely on the opinion essay she co-authored.

Despite her release, the government indicated that deportation proceedings would continue. However, experts believe her long-term prospects have improved since her release. Ms. Ozturk remained hopeful and expressed belief in the shared values of the community.

The arrest of Ms. Ozturk in March, captured on surveillance footage, drew widespread condemnation. While in detention, she faced health issues and harsh conditions, but she received overwhelming support from friends who read to her over the phone and sent letters.

As Ms. Ozturk navigates the uncertain future of her immigration status, she remains resilient and optimistic. Her story serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding free speech and supporting those who face injustice in the immigration system.
