A dramatic incident unfolded this week when a man identified as Joseph Navarro engaged in a shootout with Chicago police officers after crashing his car in Hammond, Indiana. The intense confrontation was captured on video and has since garnered widespread attention.

The chain of events began when CPD received a report of a “person with a gun” who was wanted for aggravated battery in the 13400 block of South Baltimore. Responding officers spotted the individual getting into a vehicle and driving away from the scene. They pursued him until he ultimately crashed near Dearborn and Gostlin in Hammond.

In a video shared by SubX News, Navarro, aged 50, can be seen lying on the ground next to the road, using a detached bumper for cover. It is mentioned in the footage that Navarro’s car had overturned during the crash. Suddenly, Navarro brandishes a gun and starts firing shots. The police officers return fire in response to the threat posed by Navarro.

Tragically, Navarro sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange and was pronounced dead upon arrival at St. Catherine Hospital. While two officers were taken to a hospital for evaluation, they did not sustain any physical injuries in the incident.

Following standard procedure, COPA, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, is conducting an investigation into the use of force by the officers involved. Both officers will be placed on administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days as per CPD policy.

The video footage of the shootout serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty. This incident highlights the split-second decisions that officers must make to protect themselves and the public from imminent threats.
