Harvard University is embroiled in a legal battle with the Trump administration over the government’s decision to end about $450 million in research funding to the school. This conflict has been escalating since April 11, when the government mistakenly sent Harvard a list of demands, leading to the freezing of over $2 billion in grants and ultimately prompting the university to file a lawsuit in federal court.

Despite Harvard’s legal actions, the government has continued to escalate its tactics. Education Secretary Linda McMahon warned the university against applying for federal grant money, stating that none would be provided. In response, Harvard expanded its lawsuit on Tuesday, accusing the government of doubling down on its funding cuts, investigations, and threats that will adversely affect students and research operations.

The amended lawsuit alleges that the government’s actions have left Harvard vulnerable to widespread disruption in its research operations. The university argues that the government’s demands violate the First Amendment and the Administrative Procedure Act. The Trump administration has insisted that Harvard make changes to admissions and hiring, submit to audits, and shut down programs related to diversity and inclusion.

Harvard is fighting back on two fronts, seeking to block the government’s actions against its research funding and restore the flow of money. The university’s president, Alan M. Garber, has expressed willingness to find common ground with the administration while condemning what he sees as federal overreach into constitutional freedoms.

Legal experts believe that Harvard has a strong case, but the government may still find ways to cut off funding. The university relies on federal funding for about 11% of its revenues, making the potential loss of $450 million significant. The Trump administration has accused Harvard of failing to address race discrimination and antisemitic harassment on campus, further complicating the situation.

Despite the government’s accusations and funding cuts, Harvard remains steadfast in its pursuit of justice through the legal system. The university’s fight for its research funding continues, with hopes of a resolution in the near future.
