A Mather High School Student Shot During After-Class Fight at Mather Park

A shocking incident occurred at Mather High School on Tuesday afternoon when a student was shot during an after-class fight at Mather Park. This incident has highlighted the ongoing conflicts between groups of students at the school, according to concerned parents.

Escalating Tensions

The situation began to escalate around 2:30 p.m. when the Chicago police received a 911 call regarding a “gang disturbance” outside the school. Reports indicated that there were “gang-related issues,” with one of the teens involved in today’s conflict having been previously linked to a gun-related incident earlier this year.

As a precaution, CPD dispatched patrol cars to maintain a presence outside the school during dismissal. However, the real trouble brewed at the basketball courts in Mather Park, located directly behind the school.

Violent Outbreak

By 3:15 p.m., witnesses reported a crowd of young people, some masked, gathering at the basketball courts. Within moments, shots rang out, causing chaos as kids scrambled for safety.

Ald. Andre Vasquez (40th) stated, “Staff and students were immediately brought back into the building, and the school was placed under a soft lockdown. CPD responded swiftly, confirmed there was no immediate threat to the school, lifted the lockdown, and remained on-site to support during the rest of dismissal.”

Although first responders initially did not find any victims at the scene, a 17-year-old boy later arrived at Evanston Hospital with a gunshot wound to his left arm, as confirmed by CPD. The injured boy identified himself as a Mather student.

Community Support and Investigation

In response to the incident, Ald. Vasquez assured that the CPS crisis team would be present at Mather High School to provide support to students and staff. Additionally, CPD will maintain a presence during school dismissal until further notice.

Witnesses described the suspected gunman as a Hispanic male teenager wearing a gold hoodie, possibly traveling in a white Nissan Altima. Sources suggest that tensions at the school have been fueled by conflicts between a group of Venezuelan students and other Hispanic students.
