President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed his willingness to engage in talks with Russia concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, but only if Vladimir Putin is present. Zelenskyy boldly challenged Putin, stating that the Russian leader is afraid to meet him face-to-face. The highly anticipated talks, set to take place in Istanbul on Thursday, have garnered significant attention as peace efforts intensify. US President Donald Trump has taken a proactive role in the negotiations, offering to send Secretary of State Marco Rubio and even expressing his own willingness to attend. Additionally, Trump is dispatching senior envoys Steve Witkoff and Keith Kellogg to participate in the discussions.

Zelenskyy is advocating for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire as a crucial step towards ending the conflict, emphasizing the pivotal role Putin plays in the negotiations. The Ukrainian president underscored the importance of reaching a resolution to the war, asserting that Putin’s direct involvement is essential. Zelenskyy warned of potential “strong sanctions” from the US and the European Union if talks fail to materialize.

In response to Putin’s recent proposal for direct talks with Ukraine, Zelenskyy publicly declared his readiness to meet in Istanbul, prompting speculation about Putin’s attendance. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remained noncommittal on Putin’s participation, stating that an official announcement would be made at the appropriate time.

The prospect of Trump attending the talks has added a layer of intrigue to the diplomatic efforts. Trump has indicated that he would join the discussions if Putin decides to join, potentially paving the way for a breakthrough in the peace process. Kellogg outlined a possible ceasefire agreement involving the withdrawal of Ukrainian and Russian forces to create a demilitarized zone, with international forces stationed as a deterrent.

As the negotiations unfold, the international community remains hopeful for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Newly elected Pope Leo has pledged to support Zelenskyy in his pursuit of lasting peace. Despite the challenges and complexities involved, there is a collective sense of optimism that a comprehensive ceasefire agreement can be reached.
