Boulder city councilwoman Tara Winer and two others were victims of an attack by a 26-year-old man shouting racial slurs on University Hill on Friday night, as reported by witnesses and the Boulder Police Department.

The incident occurred during a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Nana’s Dim Sum & Dumplings, where the man began yelling racial slurs and causing a disturbance. Winer intervened and was punched in the face, causing her to fall to the ground, as recounted to the Daily Camera.

Chamber President John Tayer stated that the man, who was armed with a knife, initially walked past the ceremony but later returned to the scene.

Despite suffering a headache and rib pain, Winer was reported to be “OK” following the assault, according to the Daily Camera. Boulder police confirmed that no serious injuries were sustained during the altercation.

The suspect was taken into custody on charges of felony menacing and third-degree assault.

Tayer commended Winer for her courage in standing up against hate speech and praised Boulder Chamber Ambassador Matt Jensen for his swift intervention to prevent further escalation of the situation.
