DirecTV Files FCC Complaint Accusing Disney of Bad Faith Negotiation

The ongoing contract dispute between DirecTV and Disney shows no signs of resolution as the blackout of Disney-owned networks on DirecTV enters its second week. This feud has escalated to the point where DirecTV has filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission, accusing Disney of failing to negotiate in good faith.

According to DirecTV’s complaint, Disney has made unreasonable demands, including bundling and penetration requirements that a federal court judge has deemed anticompetitive. Disney is also allegedly pressuring DirecTV to waive any legal claims related to Disney’s actions, which DirecTV believes is unfair and against the FCC’s good-faith mandates.

The blackout has left DirecTV customers without access to popular networks such as ESPN, ABC, FX, and Disney Channel. This comes at a crucial time with major sporting events like college football games and the upcoming “Monday Night Football” season opener on the horizon.

In response to DirecTV’s complaint, Disney has stated that they are actively negotiating with DirecTV to restore access to their content. They have urged DirecTV to prioritize their customers and finalize a deal that would allow subscribers to watch their upcoming lineup of sports, news, and entertainment programming.

DirecTV has placed the blame on Disney for the stalled negotiations, pointing out that their customers have already missed out on important programming. The blackout has affected over 11 million DirecTV customers, who are also facing impending price hikes scheduled for next month.

To appease subscribers during the blackout, DirecTV is offering a one-time credit and discounts on streaming packages that include ESPN’s suite of networks. However, the situation remains tense as both parties continue to stand their ground in the dispute.

As the blackout persists, DirecTV satellite subscribers have lost access to ABC local stations in major cities across the country. The timing of this dispute couldn’t be worse, as it coincides with DirecTV’s announcement of upcoming price increases for all satellite TV and streaming plans.

In the midst of this standoff, both DirecTV and Disney are adamant in their positions, with no resolution in sight. The impact of this blackout is being felt by millions of subscribers, who are left without access to popular Disney-owned networks. Only time will tell if these media giants can come to an agreement and end the blackout for the sake of their customers.
