Francois Lambrechts, a local ice swimmer, is once again braving the cold waters for a noble cause.

He is participating in the Coastguard Tautiaki Moana Big Swim to raise funds for the organization.

This challenge encourages participants to set a swimming goal and seek sponsorship from friends, family, and colleagues.

Last year, over 1260 swimmers collectively raised $350,000 for the marine search and rescue organization during the event’s debut.

Lambrechts surpassed his 50km goal by swimming an impressive 59km last year. This year, he has set a new target of 60km.

If he manages to raise $1000 before June, he will increase his June goal to 80km. Additionally, if donations reach $2000 before June, he will aim to swim 100km.

“So, feel free to ‘punish’ me by supporting this worthy cause,” he humorously remarked.

Aside from being a fundraiser ambassador, Lambrechts is also a dedicated Coastguard volunteer.

Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, Lambrechts was drawn to the comprehensive training offered by Coastguard, ranging from basic recruit to skipper courses.

As a member of the operational crew, he now mentors less experienced volunteers, emphasizing the organization’s supportive community.

Coastguard acting chief executive Philip Harkness highlighted the importance of this year’s event in building on the success of the previous year, aiming to raise awareness and funds for the over 2000 volunteers who provide essential water rescue services.

During the recent summer season, Coastguard volunteers responded to 1232 incidents, safely bringing 3210 individuals back to shore.

If you wish to support Francois Lambrechts in his fundraising efforts or sign up for the Big Swim, visit bigswim.org.nz/f-lambrechts or head to bigswim.org.nz.
