Qatar offered President Donald Trump a Boeing 747 jet as a temporary flying White House, but experts suggest that the plane may require fighter jet escorts and costly security upgrades to be able to fly inside the US. The experts and industry sources mentioned that even with improvements, the military escort and domestic restriction could still be necessary.

Security upgrades, communication improvements, and missile defenses would be needed to retrofit the luxury plane offered by Qatar’s royal family. The costs for these upgrades could be significant, similar to Boeing’s current project to build two new Air Force One planes, which exceeds $5 billion.

While Trump could waive requirements for the plane, there are doubts about whether fighter escorts and short-term upgrades would provide enough protection for the president. The ability of Air Force One to withstand various threats, including a nuclear war, is a crucial aspect that the Qatar-offered plane may not have.

Despite criticisms, Trump sees accepting the plane as a practical decision, especially due to delays in the delivery of the new Air Force One planes. The need for fighter escorts to defend against missile threats is also a consideration, as the Qatar plane lacks advanced defensive systems present in Air Force One.

The government has enlisted L3Harris Technologies to overhaul the 747 while waiting for the new Air Force One aircraft from Boeing. International travel with the Qatar plane might not be feasible due to security concerns in international airspace and airports.

The Air Force One program has faced delays, with the new planes slated for delivery in 2027. The costs for the project have risen significantly, and the retrofitting of existing airframes has proven to be more expensive than initially anticipated.

Trump’s visit to a Boeing 747-8 built for Qatar highlighted the delays in the Air Force One program. The value of the jet, estimated at $400 million, has raised questions, with analysts suggesting a lower value for a second-hand 747-8. The bespoke interior of the plane could potentially hold more value than the aircraft itself.
