An Air New Zealand flight from Auckland to Wellington had to be diverted to Christchurch this morning due to mechanical issues.
Flight-tracking website Flight Radar 24 displayed the flight path of NZ405 as it circled over the Cook Strait before making its way to Christchurch.
“NZ405 from Auckland to Wellington was diverted to Christchurch this morning because of a hydraulic system problem,” said an airline spokesperson in a statement to RNZ.
“The aircraft needed a longer runway for landing. The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority. Passengers affected by the diversion will be accommodated on the next available flight.”
