Sesame Street Finds New Home on Netflix

The iconic children’s series Sesame Street, featuring beloved characters like the Cookie Monster and Oscar the Grouch, is making a big move from Max to Netflix. The deal between Sesame Workshop, the show’s producer, and Netflix comes after Warner Bros. Discovery announced it would not be renewing its contract to distribute the show on Max (formerly HBO Max starting in summer 2025) due to a shift in streaming service strategy.

A spokesperson for Max stated that while some library series will still be available on the platform through 2027, new episodes of Sesame Street are not a core focus of their strategy moving forward. However, fans can still catch the 55th season of the show on Max before it eventually transitions to Netflix.

Old seasons of Sesame Street will be available on Netflix later this year, with season 56 premiering on the streaming service. Exact release dates have yet to be announced, so stay tuned for more information.

In an exciting announcement from Sesame Workshop, all new episodes of Sesame Street will be available on Netflix worldwide, alongside library episodes. New episodes will also be released on PBS stations and PBS Kids platforms in the US on the same day, continuing a 50+ year partnership. This collaboration with Netflix, PBS, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting aims to help children everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder.

Kay Wilson Stallings, Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Development and Production Officer for Sesame Workshop, shared that Sesame Street will be reimagined on Netflix with longer segments and more sophisticated stories. The show will also introduce a new animated series, Tales From 123, while bringing back fan-favorite segments like Elmo’s World and Cookie Monster’s Foodie Truck. Additionally, Netflix will develop video games for Sesame Street, including Sesame Street Mecha Builders.

Despite the move to Netflix, viewers in the US can still enjoy daily episodes of Sesame Street on PBS stations and PBS Kids digital platforms. The shift to Netflix promises an exciting new chapter for the beloved children’s series, with fresh content and engaging experiences for fans of all ages.
