Alderman Brendan Reilly of the 42nd Ward, which covers much of River North, is calling for a more coordinated strategy to address late-night crowds in the neighborhood. This announcement comes in the wake of a recent shooting incident in the area.

In the early hours of Sunday, a 39-year-old man was shot multiple times while sitting in his car in a parking lot at 319 West Ontario. The victim then exited his vehicle and collapsed at Franklin and Erie before being rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. This incident marks the second shooting in River North within a week, following a similar incident outside a nightclub on West Ontario.

Alderman Reilly expressed concern over the ongoing violence in the heart of River North, emphasizing the need for a proactive approach to address late-night activities in the area. He plans to meet with the 18th District commander to discuss a more effective strategy for handling the club crowds before the summer season kicks in.

Following Reilly’s statement, the Chicago Police Department announced the appointment of Christopher Bielfeldt as the new commander of the Near North (18th) District. Bielfeldt, a 26-year veteran of CPD, brings valuable experience from his previous role as captain in the Near North District and his recent stint overseeing public safety operations at Midway International Airport.

With a new commander in place and a renewed focus on addressing late-night incidents in River North, residents and stakeholders are hopeful for a safer and more coordinated approach to managing nightlife in the neighborhood. The community looks forward to working closely with law enforcement to ensure a peaceful and vibrant environment for all.
