The California Public Utilities Commission Approves Waymo’s Expansion of Robotaxi Service Area

The California Public Utilities Commission has given the green light to Waymo’s request to broaden its commercial robotaxi service area, paving the way for the Alphabet company to introduce its driverless ride-hailing vehicles into more communities south of San Francisco.

Despite the approval, Waymo has stated that it does not plan to make immediate changes to its operations. Currently, the company operates a commercial robotaxi service in all of San Francisco and parts of the Peninsula. Additionally, it offers driverless rides to paying customers in various Silicon Valley cities, including Mountain View, Palo Alto, Los Altos, and Sunnyvale. The total service area spans approximately 85 square miles, encompassing San Francisco and Silicon Valley.

Waymo’s future plans include gaining access to the San Francisco International Airport, although this is a long-term goal. In March, the company received permission to map roadways at SFO through a temporary permit. While Waymo vehicles will not operate autonomously at the airport, employees will manually drive the vehicles to map the area. This permit marks the initial step towards Waymo eventually operating commercially at the airport.

With 250,000 paid trips conducted each week across its various operations in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and the recent addition of Austin, Waymo continues to expand its reach and offer innovative transportation solutions to customers.
