The recent tragic incident in Mexico City has sent shockwaves through the country, as the mayor’s personal secretary, Ximena Guzmán, and another close adviser, José Muñoz, were shot dead in broad daylight. This highly unusual crime targeting senior officials at the heart of power has raised concerns about safety and security in the capital.

Mayor Clara Brugada, whose post is considered one of the most important elected roles in the country after the president, expressed shock and sadness at the senseless act of violence. President Claudia Sheinbaum, who was hosting a live morning news conference at the time of the incident, vowed to seek justice for the victims. Sheinbaum, who governed the capital until 2023, has faced challenges in maintaining law and order in the city.

Mexico City, known as a popular tourist destination, has generally been considered safer than other parts of the country. However, the recent attack on senior officials highlights the growing concerns about violence and crime in the capital. The presence of major drug cartels in the city, as reported by the US Drug Enforcement Administration, poses a significant threat to public safety.

Guzmán, a close collaborator of Mayor Brugada, had been working with her for many years. Her untimely death has shocked the local community and raised questions about the effectiveness of security measures in place. The ongoing war on drug cartels in Mexico has led to a surge in violence and crime, with authorities struggling to contain the situation.

President Sheinbaum, under pressure from the US government, has taken a more aggressive approach to tackling crime and drug trafficking in the country. The recent spate of violence during the 2024 national and local election cycle has raised concerns about the safety of political candidates and officials.
