Cuban Independence Day: A Call for Freedom and Solidarity

On May 20, 1902, the Cuban flag was hoisted for the first time, marking a pivotal moment after years of tumultuous warfare in the late 19th century—a triumph for the quest for freedom. This Cuban Independence Day, we pay homage to the brave patriots who liberated themselves from Spanish colonial rule, embracing the timeless principles of liberty, sovereignty, and human dignity. My administration stands firmly alongside the people of Cuba as they strive once more to secure their inherent rights, reaffirming our commitment to aid them in their noble pursuit of self-governance.

For far too long, the oppressive Cuban regime has stifled the rights of its citizens, depriving them of the freedom to live fulfilling lives, while fostering an environment of poverty, suffering, and hardship. The United States will persist in collaborating with our allies across the Western Hemisphere to promote stability, liberty, cooperation, and a brighter future for the Cuban people.

As President, I am steadfast in my support of the millions of Cuban Americans who have bravely fled the horrors of Cuban communism, rejecting the chains of tyranny to build their lives, families, and futures on American soil. Our nation thrives thanks to the resilience, warmth, and generosity of countless Cuban Americans, whose contributions enrich our cultural tapestry.

Today, we celebrate the resolve of all those who have dedicated their lives to the fight for their cherished homeland. We acknowledge the significant role Cuban Americans have played in shaping our national narrative. Above all, we renew our commitment to supporting the Cuban people in their quest for security, prosperity, and independence.
