During the early 20th century, the Industrial Revolution was in full swing, drawing people to cities with new job opportunities and technological advancements. It was a time of rapid change, where new discoveries in science and technology introduced concepts like radio waves and X-rays to the public.

In the midst of this social transformation, movements like Spiritualism and Theosophy gained popularity, offering people a way to connect with like-minded individuals and explore the mysteries of the universe and the afterlife. Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was one of many who found solace and inspiration in these philosophical and occult beliefs, seeking a deeper connection to the natural world during a time of great upheaval.

Now on display at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the exhibition “Hilma af Klint: What Stands Behind the Flowers” showcases the museum’s recent acquisition of a remarkable portfolio called “Nature Studies.” Created by af Klint in 1919 and 1920, the portfolio captures Sweden’s seasonal flora, from lilies of the valley to sunflowers, violets, and cherry blossoms.

In her botanical studies, af Klint goes beyond traditional representations, incorporating her signature abstractions and diagrams alongside the floral renderings. Each drawing is surrounded by esoteric annotations and geometries, offering a glimpse into the artist’s spiritual beliefs and philosophies.

Through her work, af Klint sought to uncover the hidden truths behind the natural world, believing that studying nature could reveal insights into the human condition. Grids with unique color relationships, energetic spirals, and geometric patterns accompany her illustrations, creating a visual tapestry that reflects her spiritual journey and exploration of the unseen forces at work in the world.

The exhibition “What Stands Behind the Flowers” will be on display at The Museum of Modern Art until September 27. A catalogue accompanying the exhibition will be released soon, offering further insights into af Klint’s work and inspiration. As we reflect on af Klint’s unique perspective and artistic vision, we are reminded of the power of art to transcend boundaries and explore the mysteries of the universe. Through her botanical studies and spiritual explorations, af Klint invites us to look beyond the surface of things and discover the hidden truths that lie behind the flowers.
